E2DS'11 Conference Report

Dynamixx’s second Conference on Energy, Environment, Defence and Security – E2DS’11 – was staged very successfully with IHS Jane’s on 3-4 May in Washington DC. Strong speaker support – a keynote address on Day 1 from Dr John Holdren, President Obama’s science adviser, and on Day 2 by US Navy Secretary Ray Mabus – set the stage for two days of intense debate on the future of the aerospace, defence and security industry in energy and environmental markets. E2DS’11 also saw intense discussion from a range of highly credentialed speakers, with plenty of input from delegates, on the role of the sector in tackling global challenges ‘beyond defence’ – challenges that included, but were not limited to climate change.

Dynamixx is the world’s first energy and environmental/defence and security consultancy, exploring - and providing solutions in - the developing ‘boundary layer’ that exists between the aerospace, defence and security (ADS) industry and energy and environmental markets. It is now working with ADS companies, as well as banking, venture capital, insurance, energy and environmental concerns from around the world to broker cooperative solutions to a range of global challenges ‘beyond defence’, including natural disaster protection and response; humanitarian relief and response; energy, environment and climate; food and water security; global logistics; healthcare; transportation; and financial/banking security, as well as insurance and re-insurance risk. Founded in 2008 by Nick Cook, a long-time senior editor for Jane’s Defence Weekly, Dynamixx was responsible for the 2008 ‘EnviroSec’08’ workshop, which posed the question of ADS involvement in energy and environmental markets for the first time, and the E2DS’09 and E2DS’11 international conferences, which examined practical ways for the ADS industry to provide technology solutions to these markets. Sponsors of these events included EADS, Finmeccanica, ITT, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Rolls-Royce, Saab and Thales.
